FAILURE IS AN OPTION (8h)
Fear stifles risk, and without risk, improvisation becomes flat. In this workshop, learn to view failure not as defeat but as a powerful tool for discovery. Doing everything "RIGHT" might be why some improvisation turns flat, uninspiring and wrong. Being a vulnerable, playful improviser who embraces risk and failure opens doors to other "right" possibilities.

Workshop
5 WORKSHOPS (á 3h)
This is a series of 5 workshops in which you get to dive into the themes described below. This workshop series is aimed for improvisers with previous experience. If in doubt about the experience level, send us an email! improhelsinki(a)gmail.com
Scene press
As humans, we are storytellers at heart, as improvisers we use our imagination to give these stories wings. In this workshop we will focus on scenes, scenes and more scenes! We’ll be exploring initiations, relationships and finding out what it is that we want to portray on stage.
Character press
Let’s dive into character together and see how they interact with the worlds we create. In this workshop we will explore the underlying motives of our characters and see how that colors our scene work.
What you find inside
By allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, fearless and honest through our character’s point of view, we add layers and believability to our choices. How you see and navigate the world around you is unique and important and can translate into wonderful character choices. By using what lies within us, (aspects of our real lives), we can create characters and beings that react more and think less. Through a series of exercises, we will be exploring what instinctively lives inside of us, and how that can add vulnerability and depth to our characters.
Grounding the scene
Whether playing humans, animated objects, the monster under the bed, or anything in between, grounding our characters adds color and life to our moments on stage. In this workshop we’ll practice bringing our characters to their reality / how they behave in the world, using their real-life knowledge as an anchor. This, along with hyper-listening at the forefront, we will build a history with the characters, places and moments we are portraying on stage.
Using screenwriting techniques to enhance our scene work
In this workshop we will explore character, environment, story and how to invoke screenwriting techniques in bringing our scenes to life. By bringing our “writer’s brain” to the stage we will dig into ways of painting moments, defining what we see through action and how our characters live and breathe in these moments.
Do I have to be a writer to take this workshop? Absolutely not!
This workshop is for those wishing to expand their improv by exploring scenes with the help of a screenwriting perspective.
These workshops are instructed by Impro Helsinki's very own Sara Palmer and you can read more about Sara here.
